I was surprised to find out that nearly 1 in any three people spell the word German Shepherd wrong, spelling them German Shepards instead. I am surprised that this word is so normally misspelled, & I am even further stunned to learn that I spelled it like this for so scores of years.

I detest spelling words mistakenly and I consistently try to avoid it. I am consistently careful to make sure that I’m on point with my spelling, however like any human being, every so often I just mess up. The great news is that I have an effortless way to keep in mind how to properly spell this breed of dog correctly.

Follow my little method here and you’ll consistently remember that it’s not German Shepards, but shepherds.

Think back to why this kind of canine was created & perhaps you will quickly figure it out. The German Shepherd was created as a labor dog, & it was just in the late 1890s that this breed came to life.

Individuals in Germany desired a canine to help herd sheep. Remember the words herd & sheep now, & then reverse them. You don’t think of the German Shepards (I’m kidding) now as sheep herding dogs, as they are ordinarily used by law enforcement to combat crime, in airports to sniff out drugs, & in other settings that rely on the dog’s good sense of smell.

This, however, is why they happened to be bred, & remembering this ought to make it much easier to spell the word appropriately.

As long as you try to keep this in mind every time you spell out the word, I suppose you’ll get it precisely from here. Do not feel too badly about it since 1 in 3 individuals do write it incorrectly.

I hope this has been useful. Here’s to a few spelling successes later in life when it comes to this fantastic variety of dog.
